If your company has a business phone number, you can easily include
a "Call" button in your ads using call extensions. Or, you can take
call extensions a step further with Google forwarding phone numbers,
which allow you to direct even more calls to your business when your ads
show on devices other than mobile phones, such as desktop and laptop
computers or tablets. You can also get detailed reports about calls that
you receive as a result of the numbers in your ads.
How it works
When you choose to use this feature, we'll assign and display a unique Google forwarding number with your ads on both mobile and desktop devices. This number is automatically generated for each ad group. Whenever a customer calls this number, the call will be rerouted to your business phone number. In ads on high-end mobile phones with full browsers, users can click to dial the number.Call extensions with Google forwarding phone numbers are only available to customers in the U.S., U.K.,France, and Germany.
Example
Let's say you own a travel agency and do most of your business over the phone. Customers looking for travel packages tend to do some research before they're ready to make a decision, so they might use their laptop or smart phone to look for possible travel destinations. When you use call extensions with a Google forwarding phone number, we'll include that number or a clickable "Call" button in your ad, which can help drive more calls to your business and give you detailed reporting on the calls that you get.Pricing
It's free to add call extensions with Google forwarding phone numbers to your ads. Here's a detailed view of how it works, including where you'll find the data for each type of call:| Devices on which a customer sees your ad | Action taken by the customer | Resulting charges | Where to view call data |
| Laptops, desktop computers, or tablets | Customer manually dials the Google forwarding phone number from a phone | No charge | Call details columns on the Campaign and Ad Group tabs |
| Laptops, desktop computers, or tablets | Customer clicks your ad | Standard ad click | N/A |
| High-end mobile devices | Customer clicks the Google forwarding phone number or "Call" button, launching the phone's dialer | Standard ad click | Call details columns on the Campaign and Ad Group tabs |
| High-end mobile devices | Customer clicks your ad | Standard ad click | N/A |
A few things to keep in mind
- Custom Google forwarding number should not be used for any other purpose. These numbers are a property of Google and can change or be reassigned at any time. Also, you'll be unable to identify calls generated from AdWords versus calls generated from other sources or marketing efforts.
- If you have caller ID, it'll work as usual. The number of the caller will be displayed to you, even though the call is being routed through Google.
- If you disable call extensions with forwarding phone numbers, we'll stop including your Google forwarding number in ads, but we'll continue to include your business phone unless you fully disable call extensions. Although we'll stop including your Google forwarding number, you may still receive redialed or manually dialed calls to your number.
- Call extensions with Google forwarding phone numbers currently don't work on campaigns using CPA or automatic bidding.
- If you're using a Google forwarding number and you've opted to show just a phone number (and not your website) with your mobile ads, your ad headline will still display your business phone number. However, the Google forwarding number will be used when the user clicks the ad to place a call.
