7 AdWords Tips for Increased Clicks

Over the past few months I have gotten more involved with AdWords campaigns that were lifeless. It seemed that every time I talked to a client they said the same thing, “You know, I have the whole account setup. I have the budget. I spent a ton on my website. Why isn’t anything happening?” There is nothing more frustrating in business that not getting a healthy return on your investment.
AdWords is obviously a complex system and requires a lot of attention and work. But when it comes to the creative part, writing ad copy, there are a few things that can give you a kickstart. Below are nine of the best tips to getting potential customers to click on your ad.

1. Research your competition!

This may seem redundant, but your competitors have probably already taken the time to do all this research and testing for you. Type in the keywords you want and observe the results the come up. Chances are you will see a pattern. Try searching for similar businesses in different areas of the country. Use what you find as a base to test from.

2. Cut the fat

Take out all unnecessary words, especially common terms and phrases such as “a, in, of, as” etc. You only have a limited amount of real estate so make sure you are succinct.

3. Use targeted keywords in the title and description

Once your AdWords campaigns have been setup, you can segment out the ad copy based on the specific campaign. This gives you the opportunity to include the specific keywords you are targeting into the title and description area. For example, if you are targeting the keyword “Maine accounting firm” make sure you put that in the description. It will draw the user’s eye to the copy and show relevance.

4. Use Capital Letters

Make sure that you use capital letters in the copy to show importance and to create structure. It’s amazing how you can actually create a design and shape based on the words you pick.

5. Use Call to Action phrases

Having strong action words can make the difference in ad copy. Although Google does not let you use the word “click” it will let you use a myriad of other words such as call, download, learn, find out, and explore to drive people to your site. I have seen ads change nothing but the opening word and triple their click rates.

6. Ask a Question?

Depending on your industry and ad content, asking a question can be a great leader. Kind of like Jeopardy, you can use the keywords as the answer and the ad copy as the question. For example, with a keyword of “dog bite attorney” it might be worth testing copy like “Bitten by a dog? 20+ years of dog bite injury experience. Call today.”

7. Ellipses (the three dot leader)

This is kind of a wildcard, but I’ve read about AdWords campaigns that have found an increase in clicks when using the three dots after the description text.

As mentioned before, the titles and descriptions are only a part of the overall AdWords strategy, but they can help increase click rates and conversion rates if used effectively. Like everything else in internet marketing, the most important thing is to continue testing and keep a close eye on everything you are doing.
